Frequently asked questions

How do I get to Punta Allen from Cancun?

For those guests who are renting a car at the airport in Cancun, take Highway 307 south to Tulum. At the first crossroads in Tulum, turn left towards Tulum Playa/Boca Paila and take this beach road all the way down south to Sol Caribe. After Tulum Beach, you will enter the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve through the arch at its northern entrance, from there follow the road for 35km to Sol Caribe. It is impossible to get lost because there is only one road heading south through the Reserve to Punta Allen – and you’re on it!

Can I get there with a small rental car ?

It depends of the condition of the dirt road in the Sian Ka'an Biosphere at the particular time. It used to be in rough shape, particularly after storms. In the last year or so, however, it has been extensively resurfaced and there are constant and ongoing improvements being made to it. You can now get to Punta Allen from Tulum in a small rental car almost throughout the year. In bad weather (mainly during the rainy season) and after storms, a Jeep or 4-wheel drive will be needed.

What kind of electronic devices can be used ?

Sol Caribe runs on solar power, therefore we can't allow hairdryers or electric razors. There is enough power in the rooms and plug-ins provided to charge cameras, phones or laptops.

Is there a gas station in Punta Allen ?

The closest gas station is in Tulum, so remember to refuel before entering the Sian Ka'an Biosphere. If you do run out of gas however, usually somebody in Punta Allen is willing to sell you some at an inflated price.

If I don’t want to rent a car is there any other possibility to get to Sol Caribe?

Public transportation : There is a minivan from Tulum to Punta Allen at 2 pm daily leaving from the main taxi station in Tulum. The price is $ 250 Pesos per person and way. The van leaves Punta Allen at 6 am heading back to Tulum.
Taxi: A taxi will charge you around US$ 100 from Tulum to bring you down to Sol Caribe.
Private Airport transfer: We can arrange a private airport transfer for US$ 250 per way (for 1- 2 person, US$ 30 more for every additional person.)

Will my cellphone work down there?

Cellphone reception is not available down here, in fact there is no cellphone reception south of Tulum in the Sian Ka'an Biosphere. We have a landline at Sol Caribe, which is available to guests in emergencies only. The phone number, which may be given out to those who may need to be in touch with our guests during their stay at Sol Caribe, is +52 1 984 139 3839 .

Is there an Internet connection ?

At the request of many of our long-time guests, we have now installed wi-fi and it is available in the public areas. It is included for our guests staying on an all-inclusive package, and available for other guests for a fee of US$ 10/day.

If I don't book the all-inclusvie package where can I eat and how long is the bar open?

You can order your meals "a la carte" at Sol Caribe's beach restaurant. We serve breakfast (7am to 10am), lunch (12pm to 3pm) and dinner (6pm to 9pm). Our restaurant is also open to guests not staying at the resort. The bar is a lively place and open until 10pm. For guests who would like to sample the local cuisine, there are a number of restaurants in Punta Allen, a small fishing village five miles down the road.

If I’m not into fishing, what else can I do there?

There is plenty to do around Punta Allen and inside the Sian Ka'an Biosphere. You can go kayaking, bird watching, explore the Mayan Ruins dotted around inside the Reserve, snorkel, watch the lobster fishermen returning from the sea in the afternoon and enjoy freshly caught lobster tails. We can organize all kinds of boat tours to explore the Sian Ka'an Biosphere for you. For further ideas on other ways to explore Sian Ka'an, please see the Activities & Ecotours page of our website.
